Part 1: What Leadership in Law Enforcement Really Means

Leadership in law enforcement is not about rank. It’s not about politics. And it’s not about titles.
It’s about responsibility.
After more than 28 years in public safety, I’ve learned that leadership is not something you turn on when you get promoted. It’s something you demonstrate every single day.
Leadership means setting the tone for the entire agency. It means establishing clear expectations, communicating them consistently, and making decisions that prioritize public safety and constitutional principles.
It means being present, not distant.
It means being steady, not reactive.
And it means taking responsibility for outcomes — good or bad.
The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office deserves strong, steady leadership. And so does our community.
On June 2, choose leadership that puts responsibility first, stands accountable to the people of San Juan County, and keeps public safety above politics.
