The San Juan County Adult Detention Center plays a vital role in our local criminal justice system

When people hear the word “jail,” they often think of a place that simply houses criminals to keep the public safe.
But the reality is more complex. Most individuals who come through our doors aren’t violent offenders. They’re people who’ve made poor decisions, often while struggling with mental health challenges or substance use.
Less than 10% of those incarcerated in our facility will go on to prison. That means nearly everyone in our custody today will eventually return to our community.
Jail isn’t just punitive; it’s also a critical opportunity for intervention.
My job, and the job of my team, goes beyond maintaining a secure facility. We work to connect individuals with the resources they need so they have a better chance of staying out of the system for good.
True public safety isn’t just about confinement. It’s about reducing repeat offenses and helping people get back on track. That benefits everyone!
I’m always happy to speak with civic organizations and other local groups interested in understanding the role our detention center plays and the work we’re doing to support long-term community safety.
I appreciated the opportunity to share this message with members of the Farmington Rio del Sol Kiwanis Club yesterday.
